Just thought I'd throw out an update for anyone who might run into a similar problem.  Sure enough, the selector switch on the back of the tach had somehow settled in between two settings.  I reset it to the appropriate setting and it is spot on with where my engine specs should be at idle and WOT.  Thanks for the suggestions.
