Hello all! I am hoping someone here has done what I'm setting out to do. I have a 90 hp Yamy two stroke on my pontoon. I also have a trolling motor and radio, etc. I have two batteries (one deep cylcle, the other a "start"), and want to install them using an isolator so I won't drain the start battery while using the "stuff" on the boat.

I have installed isolators in the past. It should be simple. You take the lead from the alternator to the isolator and it "splits" the charging juice from the alternator to the two batteries. You then take a wire from the starting battery to the starter. Easy, right? Well, first, my outboard has no alternator, it has a rectifier. I have found the wire coming from it, and it is "combined" with the wire that goes to the starter. This results in a single wire going to the battery which provides the charging current, but also provides the path to the starter FROM the battery.

My question(s): Do I need to take things apart and run a separate wire from the rectifier to the isolator (charging current) and then run a separate wire from the starting battery to the starter? Is there a simpler way to do this?
