Just a few reminders for everyone for the weekend:

The area in front of the amphitheater will be off limits to boats Sunday evening. This is necessary to create a fall-out zone to keep people from being injured or boats being damaged from falling hot cinders. This zone will be clearly marked by Boats Keep Out buoys and STRICTLY enforced.

Navigation lights, navigation lights, navigation lights. Properly placed, on from sunset to sunrise. Take extra fuses, extra bulbs and we suggest chem lights in a pinch. For pontoon boaters, please be aware that if your stern light is attached to your canopy and the canopy is in the down position then you aren't displaying the light properly. For all boats, the stern light MUST be visible 360 degrees....generally this means it should be the tallest item on your boat. Navigation light requirements will be STRICTLY enforced.

If you, a friend, or a loved one plan to jump from Chimney Rock (Acapulco, I know), please realize that you are doing so at YOUR OWN RISK. So far this summer we have had three people injured. It isn't illegal to jump from the rock but what can seem like a fun spur-of-the-minute decision can quickly turn into a lifetime of tragedy.

Caution, care and courtesy. Employ all three in abundance and be patient with your neighbors and other boaters. However, if you have a problem that can't be resolved, give us a call instead of trying to take matters into your own hands.

If you need us, you will be wasting the call by phoning the District office. We have every available officer on patrol and to reach one of us you need to call the Alex City Trooper Post at (256) 234-2601. Please remember that we now have ten-digit dialing. Of course, if you have an emergency you can reach us by calling 911.

If you drink, don't drive. It really is that simple. Use a designated operator or stay at home. There are no excuses for being arrested for BUI and we don't make excuses for arresting people who choose to operate impaired. Anyone under 21 we see consuming or possessing alcoholic beverages will be arrested.

One last thing. If you see one of our patrol boats (with lights flashing or not) pulled alongside another boat, please slow down, reduce your speed and idle past us if possible. It's difficult enough to try to stop a boat in this environment, especially when the average officer works alone. He has to talk to the operator, deal with the passengers and protect his boat and the boat of the person that's stopped. We would appreciate the effort.

With the increase in traffic due to the situation in the gulf this weekend has the potential for being one of the busiest holiday weekends ever. We ask that everyone have fun, but have fun responsibly.

Please call us if we can be of assistance.
