If you have a 'police' scanner, you might want to set one of the stored channels to 161.115 MHz. That is the frequency that Norfolk Southern (the line that runs through Alex City and Dadeville) uses on their "EOT" (end of train) transmitters.

The EOT transmitter is fairly low power, but you should be able to determine when a train is in close proximity by listening for a while.
