Just wondering if you live in the Blue Creek area? It sounds like we both have the same "helpful" neighbor who likes to scare newcomers and who likes to come across as an authority on everything related to Lake Martin. Last year was our first year on the lake and we were told the same thing about getting our boat out on Labor Day. As it turned out, we enjoyed our boat until the 3rd week of October. Just had to lengthen the lines and tied some cheap bouys on the pools of our slip. We also kept a close eye on the lake level via the website and made sure we were at the lake each week to check things out in person. Of course when you'll run out of water depends on how much water you started with (at full pool). The lake is so much more enjoyable after Labor Day without all the boat traffic. We find it much more relaxing, plus the water temp stays warm into October.
