Well, If I am welcome to it, I guess I will take it. I do not know how to simplify this any more than I already have. Southerners GENERALLY are more polite and friendly than northerners. If someone makes this observation (whether they be from above or below the Mason-Dixon) this does not mean that they are being boastful or hateful. It simply means that they are stating a generalization that tends to be agreed upon by both sides. The reason it is agreed to by BOTH sides is that ,because it is a generalization, a northerner can agree to it with out being personally held to being impolite or rude. Likewise, a southerner can agree to the generalization even if he or she knows that they, personally are a huge jerk. They know that there are exceptions to generalizations. Being that I used to work for Sherwin Williams Paint Supply, I would like to take this back to the original analogy--painting with a broad brush. When someone paints with a large (broad) brush, such as a 4" brush, there tend to be small spaces in the middle that aren't covered very well. This happens because of unequal paint distribution on the brush. A lot of paint is applied at once, making this brush effective in large areas, but small lines do get missed. The same thing is true of generalizations. Rather than taking the time to say that 3,523,956 people in Alabama, 4,567,396 people in Georgia, 1,978,347 people in Tennessee, etc. are polite, we use a broad brush to paint the word HOSPITABLE on the the south. Sure there are a couple of lines (people) missed by this stroke, but for the sake of convenience, we will let them slide. The same holds true for the north--well almost. We dip the broad brush in the rude and inconsiderate bucket when we paint New England. . .sure we could use a smaller brush and be more fair and accurate about it, but that would take a lot of TIME. Remember, MOST of these people wont take the TIME to hold a door open for you. The people up north who are polite could complain about this ugly colored paint being applied to their geographic area, but why do that? When such an ugly color is applied to everyone else, to simply go untouched by the paint (to be considered to be polite) would make your pleasantness that much more appreciated.
