Many Forum readers wrote and emailed ADEM requesting a public hearing on their intent to re-issue Dadeville's wastewater treatment plant permit. Thanks! But the job's only half done.

The public hearing is Monday 25 June 2007 at 6:30PM in the Dadeville High School auditorium and we need people there to make statements for the record. It's a public hearing, not a public meeting, so you should not expect feedback from ADEM during the evening. When you arrive at the auditorium, fill out a registration card and indicate that you wish to make comments. There will likely be a time limit of 5 minutes.

My suggestion is not to spend much time on what happened in the past but focus on two things for the future...permit compliance and permit enforcement.

At the hearing, Lake Watch will not oppose a new permit. However, we will request that the permit be modified with two requirements.

1. A prohibition on new industrial sewer hookups until the wastewater treatment plant is in permit compliance for a consecutive period of two years from the new permit date.

2. The City of Dadeville must publish monthly summaries of their Discharge Monitoring Reports in the Dadeville Record and Alex City Outlook newspapers. The summaries must be easily read, include a certification of compliance by the Mayor of Dadeville, and be published for five years from the new permit date.

For those who can't make the hearing and wish to write or email ADEM and the EPA, I have compiled an information sheet that might help with your comments. Email me at dbronson@charter.net or pick up a copy at the auditorium door. I'll also have copies at the HOBO meeting on Saturday 23 June at the Elks Lodge.

Hope to see many of you at both the HOBO meeting and the public hearing. Thanks again!
