I am still amazed by the folks who run their docking lights at night. They are called docking lights for a reason. You have no additional help from them in any way on open water. They disturb your night vision and the vision of others who are approaching you. They are also ILLEGAL to run at night unless you are docking. Here is a tip for those of you who may have trouble at night. If you cant see directly in front of you, try looking to the side to allow your periphery vision to get a view. It works well. For some reason your eyes can pick up many things your straight on vision will not. As for those spot lights, they are ILLEGAL as well and completely wreck oncoming boaters vision. I would hope the Marine Police will chime in on this as well to verify and give some more insight. If you want additional visibility of your boat to others at night, buy a strobe nav stern light, but remember your regular light is still required.
