Me and a group fish Martin a week every April (since 1972). Some are professional, some are total novices and all in between. For spring fishing I would say:

Stripers = deep water, large jigs, spoons on bottom - you really can catch some big ones, but we typically find them off rocky point (where current speeds up and brings food by), and off humps (not often near docks).

Spotted bass = easily spooked so stay quiet. Depends on where they are in spawning cycle. Pre-spawn they go into a frenzy so find the bait fish (off points & humps as they tend to lay their eggs on rocky or sandy surfaces). during/after spawn you will only catch the males (up to 2lbs) and they will take some work as they sit and fan the eggs with their tails and don't really eat per say, thought they will try and remove threats to the eggs (lizards especially) by picking them up with their mouths and dropping them. To a fisherman that means "strikes" are extremely sublte and you have to really set the hook. Just feels like your line is getting heavy. - not big fish anyway, but pound for pound very strong fighters.
