I was in the Atlanta airport, at the back of the long security line. My flight was to El Paso. I was dressed in my ACUs... headed for CRC at Fort Bliss and then on to Baghdad. My wife clung to me with tears in her eyes, but holding back. We tried to talk. She whispered, “I can’t be brave anymore, I have to go.” She kissed me tenderly and fled the Airport. I hid my face.

A petite young oriental woman began talking to me… trying to say anything to distract me. I don’t remember.

Then a woman dressed in a Delta uniform grabbed my arm and said, “This way, Sir.” She pulled out of that line and whisked me through security.

At the Delta gate for my flight, I sat alone. As they called for my zone, I moved to through the line to the gate attendant. At the gate she said, “Please, stand aside until the aircraft has been boarded.” The last to board, I found that I had been moved to First Class. As I sat down, the flight attendant squeezed my shoulder and then turned swiftly away.

I was drafted in 1968… a private during the Viet Nam War. In those days, the people disparaged servicemen. Somewhere along the line of events, the citizenry has learned that war is an extension of policy and that soldiers do not make policy. To quote from Crosby, Still, Nash, and Young, “Find the cost of freedom….”

Ah… well you finish the line.
