That is what distinguishes a liberal from the remaining 70% of the country isn't it? The majority of us look at those better off and don't want them to be unfairly punished for their success partially because we too aspire to achieve what they have (or at least know the opportunity is there if we want to take the risk and are willing to work hard).

For many liberals (those driving the junky cars covered with bumper stickers telling us to coexist or war is not the answer, etc.), they look at those better off and resent them for what they have, feel they have "won life's lottery", got what they have at the expense of those less well off or whatever mental lies they tell themselves to justify redistribution. It really reflects more on their own pathetic lives, laziness and weakness than anything else.

Then we have the super-wealthy liberals that either suffer from guilt (what I call the Kennedy syndrome....I am wealthy because of my trust fund and would otherwise just be another drunk passed out on the sidewalk) or irrelevance (the Hollywood syndrome....I am wealthy and people only like me because I pretend to be someone else or I can sing or dance). For these liberals it is all about assuaging their guilty conscience but it is much easier for them to assuage it with our money rather than theirs. That is why they always favor taxation of income but howl about taxation of wealth or assets. It is also why they take advantage of every tax loophole while they publicly proclaim they don't pay enough in taxes. And finally, it is that same pathos that makes them pontificate on how we need to protect the environment and reduce our carbon footprint while they live a lavish, high energy consumption lifestyle totally oblivious to the obvious and repugnant contradiction.

And finally we have the most dangerous and destructive liberals of all, the statist seeking political power (and their useful idiots in academia and the media) or those whose livelihood depends on government (in the public and private sector). Those in the former are not driven by envy or guilt, for them it is about their self-proclaimed intellectual elitism and the drive for power so they can put their so-called prowess to work. Lording over our lives and controlling us is their driver because they just know better what is good for us if only we would turn our lives over to them. Of course we saw where this leads everywhere it has been tried and in all times. It leads to tyranny and suppression of rights derived from natural law. It always has and always will. And for those in the latter group it is all about a pragmatic desire to maintain their standard of living, be it working for a private company that relies on government contracts or actually working for a local, state or federal agency. Of all the groups this is the only one I have any sympathy for or tolerance of their views. They also represent a minority of liberals and the least destructive.
