Today's editorial from the DECATUR DAILY recommends that Pelosi and Reid must go. I never thought that this newspaper would ever take a position like this.

President Obama should use bully pulpit

The content of President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address Wednesday night was about all people could expect given the teetering economy that’s left the nation with a raging hangover.

The glowing optimism of his first address to Congress only days after he took office last year was missing, replaced with, “I don’t quit.”

The president is in a difficult spot after losing the Massachusetts Senate seat the late Edward Kennedy held for nearly half a century.

But even with Kennedy, Democrats would not unite behind their young president because of weak congressional leadership.

The president offered new programs and called for modifications in some already proposed. But without new House and Senate leadership, his 2011 address to Congress will contain the same issues.

Senate Majority Leader Sen. Harry Reid and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi must go. They are ineffective and are not popular with voters.

The president called for common sense rather than partisanship.

“Rather than fight the same tired battles that have dominated Washington for decades, it’s time to try something new,” he said at one point. That, however, is what voters thought they were getting in Obama when they elected him in 2008.

His message Wednesday night was as much to himself as to the nation. After a year in office, he better understands the realities of hard-ball politics and, hopefully, how he can be a more effective leader.

“We face a deficit of trust — deep and corrosive doubts about how Washington works that have been growing for years. To close that credibility gap we must take action on both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue to end the outsized influence of lobbyists; to do our work openly; and to give our people the government they deserve,” he said.

His best role now may be to take on both parties in Congress in an evangelical-like crusade against corruption. He has the oratorical skills to do so and would find a receptive electorate.
