I know it is unrelated, that the attitude about guns is very different and the socio-economic demographic is in no way comparable, but it is still an interesting fact. In Scotland 98% of the police officers do not carry a firearm even when called to a situation where guns are a possibility. The last time a Scottish police officer died from hostile violent action in the fulfilling of his or her duties was in 1994. There is at this moment a delegation of US police officials in Scotland observing and trying to learn why almost no police / citizen confrontations in Scotland escalate to or end in a violent confrontation.
