Local amendment seeks security in gated communities By Dale Liesch Published: Tuesday, November 4, 2008 9:07 AM CST After reports of wrecks and other things related to motor vehicle safety happening within the gates of Stillwaters development, the board of directors is ready for a change and voters can help them on Tuesday.
Local amendment two, which will appear on the general election ballot, would allow for the enforcement of motor vehicle and traffic laws on private roads within gated communities in Tallapoosa County if approved by local legislation.
Cal Johnson, president of the board of directors at Stillwaters thinks its time for the measure, which would allow the Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Department inside gated communities but wanted to clear up a misconception among voters, pertaining to the legislation.
“This would be on a very limited basis,” Johnson said. “It would only be used when we see a need. We are just doomed without some law enforcement presence over there.”
In fact, according to Johnson, the board of directors understands it would only happen when the department had the proper resources to allow for it.
“This will not detract from regular law enforcement work in the rest of the county,” Johnson said. “We are not expecting the Sheriff to go way out of his way.”
Johnson added that even having signs posted within the community would go a long way toward fixing some of the problems.
Steve Forehand from Russell Lands said, as of now, the company has no plans to deal with the legislation for its Willow Point community.
“We do not plan on asking for that legislation for any of our communities,” Forehand said.
However Forehand added that Russell Lands understands the importance of the issue for the Stillwaters development and would not stand in the way of the bill.
“Our position is officially neutral,” Forehand said. “We know that it is important to the Stillwaters community.”
Tallapoosa County Sheriff Jimmy Abbett said in previous interviews that he would be in favor of the measure from a safety aspect but said the department would have to dedicate their manpower to their needs as well.
