In person may help .... but if they are threatening collection on you for their error, here is a sure fire way to fix it. Take their collection letter, write a polite letter back that explains the problem and attach the ad you reference. Tell them that their letters are considered "harrassment" (you need to say that) and since there is an obvious disconnect and you will not be paying the amount due so you suggest that either they correct their records or proceed to immediately take this to court to resolve. Additionally, you need to tell them that if they report any negative information to a credit agency prior to a court hearing is a violation of the fair credit standards and you will hold them responsible for the erroneous reporting and the damage it may cause you.

Be polite and don't threaten ... just state the facts and expectations, but while still making the necessary points since the letter could wind up in court (but highly unlikely).

You need to send it certified mail with a return receipt. That will normally get it in to the right hands and resolved very quickly.

If you tell them that notices are harrassment, by law they can not send them any more. they also can not turn it over to collections or report it to a credit agency if you request that it immediately goes to court. This was added to protect consumers when the company is wrong. Companies normally look closer at it and back down since they don't want to spend the money to go to court and they don't want to lose where it would be public and even have to pay you for your costs to resolve and anything the court may award as punitive to punish Charter.
