Midshipmen have not worn swords to graduation at any time in recent history. They are not prescribed for the ceremony. Officers in grade O-3 (LT) and below are not required to even have a sword. It is an optional uniform item. Only officers in grade O-4(LCDR) and above are required to have a sword.

I am a USNA Grad. Swords are not a part of the ceremony. I was there for ceremonies when Clinton, Gore, Bush, etc were in attending. No swords then either.

In response to Kent Greenough, officers do not take an oath of allegiance to the President, the oath is to the Constitution. An order from the President or anyone else to “leave your Constitution at home” would be unlawful according the the UCMJ and would not have to be followed.

This is nothing but someone making controversy where there is none.
