Feb,

I don't know where you're from, but it appears that your mind has been warped by the "big brother government we'll take care of you, you poor incompetent soul" types. Specifically, let me address the policy in Alabama of not having vehicle inspections.

I've lived in states where vehicle inspections are required, and if you analyze the conditions of the vehicles on their streets rationally, you will find that their vehicles are no SAFER than vehicles on Alabama's roads. I stress SAFER, because I do not mean PRETTIER, which is generally what people who favor vehicle inspections want - pretty cars on the road so that they don't have to look at ugly old cars. If you can show me any data that indicates that Alabama's vehicles are less safe, resulting in more accidents than in states where vehicles are inspected, I'll eat my words. But I'll bet you can't.

The only thing that vehicle inspection requirements accomplish is to put more money in the pockets of corrupt mechanics who cheat unwitting motorists for work that does not need to be done. In particular, women are viewed by these unscrupulous mechanics as plums ripe for the picking, and vehicle inspections allow them a venue to steal money (gee lady, you and your kids won't be allowed back on the road unless you pay me $500 for a $95 brake job, and by the way I'm going to make you buy new shocks while I'm at it). Let's not even get into the loss of productivity in a society as everyone has to dedicate at least half a day a year (or even twice a year in ridiculous states like Virginia that require inspections every six months) to grovel to some inspection station weanie to get a sticker for your window.

Try to view the role of government, and specifically Alabama's supposedly backward rules, regulations, and policies with an open mind. I think you might find that just because something was done a certain way where you came from, it's not necessarily the only way to do things. I know rational analysis is difficult for those who have been brainwashed all their lives by the government nannies, but please try.
