Our first outting on the lake,on a weekday, left us stranded. We were a short distance from our cove. One boat came by. They tried to ignore us but finally felt guilty and came over. They towed us back to our dock. We offered beer or gas. He asked for $15.00 for gas. She asked for $20.00. We gave them the money, grateful that we hadn't remained stranded. As they pulled away they laughed and said that they were on their way over to a friends place which was right around the corner and that we had made the trip free for them. I still was happy not to be dog paddling and trying to pull the boat but acting kind wouldn't have hurt since we were obviously upset anyhow.
A couple of weeks later we saw a boat in the water with two large inflatables behind it. We avoided it thinking that the folks were trying to get started. Thirty minutes later they hadn't moved and we inched toward them not wanting to run over kids who might be in the water. Sure enough they were broken down. We towed them in and they said thanks. A couple of days later one of the children showed up at the front door with a bag of very nice peaches.
Any jesture of appreciation is nice. I am always afraid to offer beer in the Bible belt but not everyone will accept money for gas. We took a couple of nice steaks to a neighbor who did us a favor and who we knew liked to fire up the grill. Which reminds me. Is there a place anywhere near the lake to get a good steak? I would like to support the local economy but haven't found a decent steak in the Alex city area yet. Hoping maybe I just don't know where to look.
