I know the Asko brand washing machine uses the reduced water amount water amount mentioned by jlazc, use high efficiency detergent (Tide HE as and example) and contains its own internal hot water heater. There are most likely other brands with similar features.

The initial cost for the appliance is high, but it does reduce electrical or gas (depending on type hot water heater in your home), water and detergent consumptiion to the point it pays for itself with the savings in a couple of years.

Asko also has clothes dryers and dish washers.

They are joked about as the Volvo of appliances since they are produced in Sweden and have a reputation for longevity like Maytag used to.

These type appliances (Asko and others) help with futher reduced sewage or septic use.
