People erroneously think marinas make a lot of money on the gas that we sell. Not true. The insurance costs to pump fuel over the water and costs of equipment and compliance with enviornmental regulations is significant and has to be divided by the number of gallons sold per year, which is not that many. For example, last year, we sold more gas on July 3rd (a single day) than in the preceeding months of October, November, December, January, February, and March! If more people bought their gas at the marinas, the costs would be spread across more gallons and the retail price could come down.
Did you know that, if you spill enough gasoline to create a 2' x 2' slick on the lake's surface, it is technically an 'environmental incident' requiring the notification of the Coast Guard, EPA, and ADEM and the fines for not doing so begin at $5,000 per incident? Now you know.
