There are options available. Every year BC/BS advertises open enrollment in the fall. One can purchase an individual policy for under 200/mo. Pre-existing conditions are disallowed for a year and then they are covered. Another option is to join a Chamber of Commerce. Not all, but many have plans in place where members purchase 'group' policies through them.

Just about any child is elegible for some type of government health plan now up to age 18. Here it is called AlaCare. Some estimate that up to half of the uninsured nationwide are already eleigible for govermnet subsidized health care now. They just don't apply.
