Historically speaking, as in the span of humankind, freedom is not just rare but almost non-existent. Our fallen human nature has always tended toward autocracy. Most people simply do not have the drive or moral foundation to prefer freedom and rule as consented by the governed over some form of aristocracy and the illusion of security.
The U.S. was a grand experiment in self government and so much good around the world happened because of its existence. But the ruler of this world is not only crafty but patient. Unless you have a belief in eternity and that the final battle is already won you might despair. If not you have reason for hope. However, what I despair for is all the souls lost in the process. We would do well to pray earnestly for our country because it is only with God's grace and the courage of moral men that we might step back from the brink.
