I lived though the equity this both as a beneficierie (being a woman) and as a manager when you had to justify why you didn't hire a black . Also lived with one where you had to justify not hiring a veteran. In a way, the veteran thing was the hardest, because they were being referred for jobs that some of them weren't even remotely qualified for - and it was hard on them because they were getting rejected, because at the end of the day, rejection is still a rejection.
Just because you get an opportunity doesn't mean that you will excel. It doens't mean that you will be accepted by your peers. All the politiicans, like Biden, care about are the numbers that they can tout as proof of their "success". They don't care how it really works. I suspect that companies are being subtly threatend by regulators to embrace these policies so they put them out in their mission statements. But you can't legislate people's behavior.
On the other hand, maybe some good will come of it. We need to become a more tolerant society from where we have been in the past. I had no experience with black people when I was growing up. But when I worked for the Army, the organization I worked for was mostly black and I found out that a lot of fears that I had about black people were unfounded. I worked with a lot of gay people - had never seen a gay person before I was working with some. I suspect if I was still working, I would be exposed to trans people, non-binary people and the rest of which, beyond gay I really don't understand.
You say you hate people that are overweight. That must be really hard for you living in Alabama, where the population is mostly overweight. I myself am overweight, despite adhereing to a healthy diet and regular exercise (I have a personal trainder), but I take 3 medications that cause weight gain. I'm fit, I'm healthy but I still would not pass your bias. I can live with that. But I know you are a writer so do you refuse the royalties that come from your overweight readers?
