Man flees from police

By Amy Redd

Police are still looking for a man who led officers on a high-speed chase throughout Alexander City and Coosa County Thursday morning.

Kenneth Joe Price, 45, of Highway 63 South, eluded police for 40 minutes before he fled on foot into a wooded area on Lake Martin near Coosa County Road 24.

The car chase began at approximately 9:24 a.m. on U.S. Highway 280 when Alexander City patrol officer Steve Robinson attempted a traffic stop to serve an arrest warrant.

"Officer Robinson spotted Price in the car and recognized him as someone the department had a felony warrant on," said Capt. Tim Baker of the Alexander City Police Department. "The officer turned on his blue lights but Price didn't stop, he sped up."

According to reports, Price led the officer west bound on U.S. 280 then crossed into Coosa County, traveling on several county roads before making his way back onto U.S. 280 and into Alexander City. Baker said Price then briefly drove into Coosa County again and cut over to Highway 22 in Alexander City.

"He turned into the Sportplex and then out onto Elkahatchee and towards Highway 63 South. The pursuit went back into Coosa County and on several county roads before he ended up on Fish Pond Road," Baker said.

The car chase ended at approximately 10:01 a.m. after Price turned onto Coosa County Road 24 and jumped out of his vehicle and ran into a wooded area with officers in pursuit on foot, Baker said.

"The pursuit ended in an area called Parker's Island, right on Lake Martin," Baker said. "From what I understand, the chase terminated right at the water's edge so Price literally drove as far as he could in effort to get away from police."

Several local law enforcement agencies were called in to assist Alexander City police units with the search for Price, including the Tallapoosa, Coosa and Elmore county sheriff's departments and Alabama state troopers. The Alabama Department of Public Safety provided a helicopter to aid in the search and the Alabama Department of Corrections brought tracking dogs out to the scene. In addition, Alabama Marine Police officers searched the water for any signs of Price Thursday afternoon. At press time, Price was still at large and several units continued their search of the area.

In addition to the original felony warrant for a probation violation, Price will likely face several traffic violation charges.

Baker said residents living in the area should be on the lookout for the fugitive. Police described Price as a white male with green eyes, brown hair and a "scraggly" beard. He is approximately 5 foot 10 inches tall and 175 pounds. When he abandoned his vehicle, police said Price was wearing dark blue coveralls.

"People in the area should be cautious and alert. Keep your doors locked and especially keep your keys out of the car. When you've got a situation like this with someone at large, they can get desperate for a way out so be careful," Baker said.

Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Kenneth Joe Price should contact the Alexander City Police Department at 234-3421 or the Coosa County Sheriff's Department at 377-9119.
