OK, not ALL island campers are slobs; I just wanted this post to get some attention. But SOME island campers are unbelievably trashy, and now that summer is over there are unbelievable piles of trash to prove it. So far the worst I have seen is Dixie Island (or Dixies, depending on which map you use; it's the island closest to the Dixie Sailing Club.) It looks like someone squatted there all summer, and when they left they left behind their tent-- it has a hole in it, so I guess it's considered trash-- three ripped folding chairs, a grill that they tossed into the lake, and hundreds of beer cans. And, a few dozen yards away from the campsite, there is a small landfill that contains what looks like a few thousand cans and bottles, plus other trash.
And that's just ONE campsite on ONE island. It won't surprise me to learn that there are other sites, other islands, that are even worse.
I'm not looking to get island camping banned; I've done it too often myself to say that it shouldn't be allowed. But if I see too many more dump sites like that one-- or if I think too hard about "if this is what they are throwing on the ground, what are they throwing in the lake?"-- then I might have to change my mind.
