Well kizma I know more about the grid than the average bear I can assure you.  You are right is about money for sure.  Martin has had generator upgrades that make it more efficient than most of the others in the state.  I also know that they sometimes sell power to other grids across the nation.  When they do this they get on average about 15 times what they sell it to us for.  They also like to do it with hydro because it is the cheapest way to generate it.  Hydro is also the method of choice for these transfers for the very reason that you state, so little of the consumer power sold to us is generated by hydro.  Therefor, when they sell 'off grid' they can generate the power with hydro without depleting the grid of the Alabama system.

Earlier this week  it was reported that the Texas grid was strained due to the highest demand ever.  I am sure they were 'importing' power from many other sources. One of those may have been APCO.  Although as I stated earlier electricity can only be transmitted about 300 miles before it degrades to be being to expensive, it can be transferred from grid to grid with cooperation of the other systems all the way across the country in extreme circumstances.  We are blessed in Alabama to be in the middle of Southern Company's grid.  We enjoy the lowest rates in the country and NEVER have issues with 'brown outs' and the like.

Now you go and do some research.  Disprove anything I have said, I dare you.  My Father in law retired from SOCO last year and has educated me for years in the workings of APCO and the national grid in general.  So go and pick a fight elsewhere on the forum with someone that doesn't know you and where you may have superior knowledge. Maybe OSMS would like to retain you to sue APCO for daring to use the lake for what it is intended.
