woodboat is correct. Armadillos eat grubs (LOVE them) and any other insects that dwell in the soil. The best way to deter them is to control the insect population in your yard - not just grassy areas, but areas where leaves and other organic matter settles and stays - mulch, etc.
That beind said, if you shoot one, an armadillo will make a really cool beer holder when it is placed on its back with all four feet in the air!!! Just shoot, roll it over, place beer between feet! TEXAS BEER HOLDER!
