I suspect the difference in price is based upon taxes. Most of the cost of gas is based upon Federal, State, Oounty and local municiapality taxes.

I think gas stations only make a few cents per gallon on gas, and this is why they have to make them into quick and easy stores to make a living or profit. You never see a gas station anymore that is not either a store or an auto repair facility. They can not make a living on the profit off gas. You will also notice a higher price for Marina gas, and actually it is a real bargain compared to what the Marina's make off a gallon of gas.

I have made a lot of trips up an down the East cost recently while my retirement home is under construction. The section of GA between Chattanooga, TN and Alabama used to be the cheapest gas going. It is now more expensive than gas in VA, TN or AL.

I think one of the reasons gas prices keep going up is because of more fuel efficient cars. They require less gas, and the cost per gallon has to continue to go up to support the taxes for roads and other local taxes. It is similar to tobacco and liquor taxes except we all have to drive.

We are lucky in the South and do not have too many toll roads. There are many sectors of the USA where toll roads and bridges will eat you lunch in a hurry.. Tolls were initailly created to pay for the cost of initial construction of a new road or bridge.. Now (after construction cost has been recouped) they are still existence to pay for maintenance and the bureaucracy they initially established. The same can be said about State lotteries since most of the proceeds do not end up going to the ultimate goal.
