One I read recently was "Tell my Sons: A Father's Last Letters" by LTC Mark Weber.  He was diagnosed with terminal cancer when he was 39 years old and had just been hand selected by Petreus to go to Iraq for an important mission.  These are letters he wrote to his sons, about his career and lessons he learned in life.  

Weber died in 2013.  Surprisingly, it is not at all depressing.
