The Second Annual Bass Pro Shops Crappie Masters Alabama State Championship was last weekend in Millbrook. Sixty-eight fishing teams came from fifteen states to fish the two-day tournament. They use several trolling techniques but the most popular seems to be “pushing”. They use a spider rig (eight poles normally twelve feet long) with two jigs on each line tipped with a minnow. They also have a high quality trolling motor and electronics to find the fish and control their trolling speed. When they find the fish they typically place four poles at the depth indicated and two about a two feet above the fish and two below the fish. They troll slowly and do not allow the baits to bounce. I am not a Crappie Pro but I do listen fairly well. Their web site is www.crappiemasters.net. Next year the state championship will also be in Millbrook in March and Millbrook will host the National Championship in October 2011. Sorry, can’t help with locations in the north end of the lake but we have plenty on the forum that can.
