I'm not an expert. But I think it's because of the cold. The shad get frozen in the ice that has formed on the lake last week and that kills them. They just get washed into the backs of the sloughs as the current moves them downstream.

This year is the first of my 5 years here that I have seen large sheets of ice floating down the river in the early mornings. I too am waiting on spring.
