That came from my tech group. One of our French techs added this tidbit:

"This is actually a true story. In a desperate attempt to save his client's head, one of the most famous French lawyers, Moro-Giafferi, used it at the trial of Henri-Désiré Landru, a famous French serial killer (he murdered at least 11 women) who "operated" during and shortly after WW1. And as in your story, he was the only person in the courtroom who didn't turn to look at the door..."
