LOGAN MARTIN LAKE — The Logan Martin Lake Protection Association (LMLPA) is in the middle of volunteer sign ups for the annual lake cleanup.

“We are trying to get the word out about this year’s lake cleanup, and get everyone signed up,” said Bud Kitchin, chairman of the annual Logan Martin Lake Protection Association lake cleanup. “The sooner we can get everyone signed up, the better.”

The LMLPA lake cleanup is March 26-April 2. The cleanup is part of the Alabama Power Company “Renew Our Rivers” program, which involves thousands of volunteers and takes place on many lakes in Alabama and the southeast. This is the 12th LMLPA lake cleanup.

“We have added a new way for volunteers to sign up to participate in the lake cleanup,” Kitchin said. “We now ask that volunteers sign up on the LMLPA website, at www.LMLPA.org.”

Kitchin said the more volunteers who sign up using the website, the easier it is to coordinate the cleanup sites and other details. Individuals may still participate in the cleanup even if they do not sign up on the website.

“Last year, we made the lake cleanup a full week long, which worked out great,” he said. “So we are doing that again this year.”

Kitchin said last year, Alabama Power Company partnered with the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts to offer a ‘Renew Our Rivers’ patch to boy and girl scouts who participate in the cleanup.

“Participating in the cleanup also counts as community service hours for the boy and girl scouts,” he said.

Kitchin said individuals wishing to participate in the cleanup during the entire week should go to a convenient collection site between 8 a.m. and noon March 26. LMLPA representatives will sign up volunteers, and issue bags, t-shirts, and latex gloves. Between March 26-April 2, volunteers should return full Renew Our Rivers bags to the collection site and place them in the specially marked dumpster. Bags must be returned to the collection site because lake trash is not allowed in city or county garbage containers. Individuals should only use the LMLPA issued bags.

Individuals wishing to volunteer only on April 2, should go to a convenient collection site between 8-9 a.m. LMLPA representatives will issue the t-shirts, bags, and latex gloves. After working the morning hours, volunteers are invited to a free cleanup celebration picnic from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on April 2 at Lakeside Landing.

There are five collection sites this year. Individuals with questions regarding the sites may call:

• Lakeside Landing- call Don Greer at 205-525-4651 or 205-253-4651.

• Clear Creek Marina- call Johnny Beavers at 256-268-0855 or 205-405-1880.

• Poor House Branch Marina- call Ron Vaughan at 256-268-9156 or 256-761-5355.

• Riverside Marina- call Cliff Early at 205-338-4095 or 205-706-5141.

• Woods Surfside Marina- call Mike Riley at 205-531-2372.

For more information or to volunteer call Bud Kitchin at 256-239-0242.
