I think you were too late. Before I moved, they would build a nest annually in the aluminum structure under my pontoon boat. I think they usually started in late Feb or early March. We took them for weekend rides to Chimney Rock and it didn't seem to faze them. When we returned the parents would return to chirping and feeding.
