Visited Fontana Lake in western North Carolina recently. The area is also experiencing a drought, about 12 inches below normal. The lake borders on the Great Smokey Mountains National Park on the north and U.S. Forest land on the south. Due to publicly owned land, very, very few private homes are on the lake. The lake is about one-fourth the size of Martin. Its full pool elevation is 1710. Depth at the dam is 490 feet. The lake is currently 60 feet down, normal winter drawdown. Their high water point this year was 1680. Had water for July 4th but went down quickly. The TVA owns the dam and FERC manages the water flow.

Marinas there move houseboats (a small cabin on styrofoam) to the main channel during the summer and tie off. Houseboat owners arrive at the marina and cruise to their house boat. Cabins have generators and bathrooms. Marinas provide sewage removal. As the lake falls, cabins are moved into protected areas and eventually rest on the bottom. Entire rows of floating boat sheds are now sitting on the bottom, boats and all. I saw two multi-story deck boats that are house size also sitting on the bottom. The whole area is a strange site.

Made me feel somewhat better about Martin. Our water problems are indeed widespread throughout the south.
