Our view: State in running for VW plant
06-17-2008
Alabama lawmakers may have to go back into special session if it looks likely it can lure Volkswagen to join the state’s burgeoning auto manufacturing population. While taxpayers hate the idea of paying for yet another special session, if this one comes to pass, it will be well worth the investment.
Alabama is vying for the plant with Michigan and Tennessee, and whoever wins gets a plant that would mean 2,000 new jobs when it opens in 2010.
Alabama is already home to facilities representing Honda, Mercedes, Hyundai and Toyota, testimony to the state’s readiness to add another auto manufacturer to its growing industrial list.
The special session needed would be aimed at raising the state’s borrowing cap so that it can offer incentives to bring the industry Alabama’s way. It requires a constitutional amendment, so voters would be asked to give their stamp of approval in the Nov. 4 general election.
We have seen firsthand what those incentives mean, returning plenty more than the investment itself.
We certainly hope Volkswagen sees the benefit of investing in Alabama, and we equally hope voters see the value in investing in Volkswagen
