What would Christopher Columbus think about that?

The space and defense industries are accountable for a majority of all technical innovations. When forced to find a solution thats viable for space life, or to fight a more humane war, the rest of the commercial industry gains huge benefits in leaps and bounds when the technology is released. You can't put a value on these innovations.

If you have ever used a GPS system then your question has been negated.
