To the best of my ability (as neither Elitist nor Poor) here is a recap of the discussion as I read it:

1. RL wants to establish “Lake City” (Lake Martin Development Area) to govern development, regulate use, and tax land adjacent to Lake Martin in Elmore, Tallapoosa and Coosa Counties, and Alexander City.

2. The document describing the “Act” to create such an entity is not easy to read. (http://www.savelakemartin.com/lmdc.htm)

3. The crux of the discussion: Individual landowner freedom versus
Big Corp/Govermentt Wannabe establishing zoning regulations, enforcement and taxation.
Does freedom = redneck development? Does BigDaddy regulation = elitist?

4. Lake Martin has old cabins, remodeled cabins, large multi-million dollar mansions, some nice developments, some exclusive gated developments, some Bama Parks, some public access parks and ramps, some houses built within the natural landscape, some houses (condos) built in spite of the natural landscape, many add-on houses with the old lake cabin as a start, some businesses with public access, much undeveloped shoreline and a lot of beautiful islands. Each who owns enjoys what they have. Many who do not own also thoroughly enjoy the lake.

5. RL has some very attractive developments and has, for the most part, been environmentally friendly with those developments.

6. RL has abandoned the “customer service” philosophy that made them great for 30 years.

7. Alexander City was possibly considered for Lowes and Bass Pro stores, but the influence of RL kept them out. RL tried to keep out Home Depot but was unsuccessful. That event added fuel to the fire to establish Lake City because RL is losing influence and control in Alexander City.

8. RL removed a lot of folk from leased land lake cabins that they had used for many years, to make room for larger developments (possibly to get the “right” kind of people). RL apparently bulldozed someone’s property to make a road for its use. (A personal note: I saw those cabins as the exact picture of what Lake Martin was all about)

9. RL possibly has a couple of illegal dump sites.

10. Too much freedom in development leads to areas like Karis Park, Crowne Point and others. Rape and pillage of natural surroundings is not a desired construction philosophy.

11. All lake landowners, and some non lake landowners, need a voice in any agency/government/commission established to address development and management of Lake Martin properties.
