I always had the clay ones but now they are ceramic and less likely to crack. What happens is you light the charcoal get a beer, check the charcoal, get a beer, check the charcoal get a beer and CALL THE FIRE DEPARTMENT! Seriously they will just seem to take forever to light and then suddenly Poof! Nuclear. So you have to leave off the beer until it starts up. :-(
