I will group myself in that group as well - I thought that our armed forces fought to win, I had no idea that you could just schedule an end to a war. I guess our minds are enriched now that we are being led by an organizer. On second thought - yet another indication that we as a country are SCREWED!

The Nincompoop in Chief is just stylin'. Our men and women are at war... bleeding... dying... and he has just AGAIN... voted "present".
Recall playing "catch" with a three year old? Well our prsedent is playing nerf ball and the enemy is playing hardball. As funny as the picture seems... I'm really not laughing.

Our fearless leader commited to 30,000 troups.... not the 40,000 requested. What is the reasoning behind that? I guess just to show who's boss. Took him 3 months to figure that out. Then, all this talk about how long it will take to deploy them just to pull them out at his designated time. Wow, think the Taliban and Al Quaida might just go into hiding and wait this one out? I would. What a joke. Either get in or get out! At this point, I don't care which.

This is an indication of just how political our Government decisions (or lack thereof) have become. At this point, I say pull ALL of our troops from abroad. I do NOT want to hear anything from the left WHEN the next strikes hit our country.

Lamont, you are not missing anything. This is what happens when and OJT Commander in Chief, who has never worn any kind of uniform, conducts political obfuscation in a public forum.
Do not be surprised if generals begin to resign in droves. Military strategy cannot be served by voting “present” or “Democrat” or “Liberal”. Military strategy relies on decisiveness and leadership. He has waffled for eleven months only to mumble platitudes in the face of the very young blood whom he would commit to the fray. He has no understanding of what he is directing. Remember, he has less training than a second lieutenant and no authentic security clearance.
Obama is a useless and dangerous operator on the dumb end of a very good sword.

I respect your views so, I got a ? Does this remind you, at all, of Viet Nam? I was 2 years to young to go at the time but, it appears to me, this is a war being fought by politicians..... again. When will we learn?

I must admit to being an absolute idiot as I always thought our military goals had always been victory. What we got, as Bob Schieffer put it so well, makes no sense. Best analogy I have heard so far is it was like a football coach announcing the team will vacate the field at the end of the first half and not come back out in the second half. Scathing review in Der Spiegel, tortured explanations from the talking heads in the government media. Consensus is that he has proposed something that no President has ever done before. Why? Because it makes no frigging sense and is profoundly stupid. The guys is a man-child that is sadly in a very important position.
On a side note, did you hear that the Commander of Cadets had to come out and admonish the students to clap when the Messiah came into the room. Absolutely amazing.......and sad....

I was drafted in 1968. Everyone else in my AIT (combat engineer) was deployed to Viet Nam. I speak German and was eventually sent to Germany. I did not ever serve in Viet Nam. (I was discharged from active duty as an E5 in 1973. I received a direct commission and returned to active service as an engineer officer in 1980)
As a private in 1968, my world was heavily compressed to my level in the food chain. I neither understood the politics of the time nor spent much time thinking about such. I did know it was a bad time to be a soldier. People in my own age group disparaged me because of my being in the Army. Thank God, the reverse is true today. Soldiers do not make politics but the conundrum is that war is the violent prosecution of politics.
Yes, the politicians ran the Viet Nam War then… and they did badly. Generals were forced to resign or did so in disgust. Body counts and other such misinformation were rampant.
Most of my buds as I progressed to NCO ranks had Viet Nam experience. Their perspective was that I did not miss anything.
Technology has advanced such that Strategy is formulated in Washington DC and Tampa, directed from Tampa (McDill AFB), and refined to Tactics in theater… via satellite.
Three very important considerations:
1- We have true combined arms and services now. All of the services seamlessly support one another. A combat unit on the ground can have Navy or Air Force air-to-ground or air med-evac within minutes… even seconds now.
2 – Our technology to “see” and “touch” the enemy is… uh… beyond belief. Our equipment is superb (hmmm… I would have preferred a 1911A1 over the M9).
3 – The American people understand and love American service men and women. The outpouring of support from home occasionally brought tears to my eyes during my service in Baghdad (2007).
However… As in Viet Nam our ignorant, ill trained enemy makes up for his deficiencies with irrational fanaticism. We are trying to respond rationally to an irrational enemy. Like Viet Nam, the people of the countries wherein we are fighting have a very low regard for life itself, much less any understanding of Western culture and freedom. When we arrived, they knew we were leaving and the status quo is held in suspense until we do.

The Joe Biden quote to the effect that a crisis would come up early on and the President would make a decision that no one would understand or believe (paraphasing).........think this is what he had in mind? Wonder if there are any old bull democrats left who can rise up to control this madness? Where is Sam Nunn et al when you need them?
