Spillway gates were open about 5pm and the fishing area was under water. I guess tomorrow will put more back in there.

What is going on with the water level. Been on the lake 3 years and never seen it fluctuate so much especially with relatively mild rains. Why is it way below normal for this time of year.with the large amount of rain and industrial and farm usage down dramatically. What are they doing with the water? Can,t be healthy for the lake ecosystem.

I am the same way.I have been here for three years alsoand have yet to figure out why my lot has been flooded twice. I think that we are the red headed step child or something. No other lake on the chain does this. When I first got it, we were the only lake that was dry. Then we were flooded. I don't get it. Ga. Steve

It changes more than the others because we are the holding resorvoir and power generating lake and the other lakes on the Coosa chain are " run of the river" lakes. But it has never fluctuated this much and was supposed to be lowered only 3 feet this year. What happened?

Ive pretty much been hearing the 3 feet below full pool winter drawdown for almost twenty years.

This year we have experienced more days sub-freezing than is normal thereby APCO has been generating more power. People enjoy heat in their homes. Rainwater through a dam is less expensive than coal burned in a fossil fuel plant.

It is what it is and Im fairly sure if Alabama maintains enough rain we will have a full ( or close to) full pool around the same time we usually have it.

Hope all are well and safe

Didn't MovinFR8 say they had the flood gates open? That doesn't produce very much power from Logan Martin. I think it is poor management by Al Power.

Yes, the flood gates were open to empty out the lake....... APCO said twoi years ago that the dam power was not needed at all unless extreme conditions arose....... Nothing extreme ever happens in Alabama

yes he did but I had already heard that from a relative who lives on the lake.

I have been in the past critical of APCO, especially during the drought but came to the conclusion that since I have no personal knowledge of why they make the decisions they do as well as having never been in charge of such an operation I would slow my criticism until I had a better understanding.

Thinking as you do, perhaps you should be the person we should come to when and if we have questions as to how to operate the dam system on the Coosa and why it is operated as it is.

Have a nice day and God Bless

Thats the whole point of this conversation. To try to learn more about the operation and why decisions are made. We have investments in property on the lake are not trying to run the dam or the Power Co. Just wondering why decisions are made and why it seems to change from year to year. That is the great thing about the forum that we can ask questions and hopefully someone can contribute information to understand what the thought process is so we can prepare our properties ahead of time. I have had to leave work twice this year to get my boats out before they washed over the pier. God Bless

hookdoc, I can relate to what you've posted having taken care of my parents place for some 18 years and inheriting it two years ago.

The second year they had their place a friend and I had to get in the water at 1 AM and cut the boats loose from the piers to keep from uprooting the piers. Water was rising FAST.

Why APCO does what they do ,I dont know but when I complained on the forum a couple of years ago about Lay being full pool and Logan being down so far I was in formed in this forum about *run of the river*, something I had never heard about.

Here is the thing,,, we can THINK that APCO doesn't know how to manage the dam and lake system but until someone can come up with an intelligent answer ,other than *thinking* it, we have to accept that which is.

Why were the flood gates open the last time they were? I ,frankly dont have a clue. For some reason APCO wasn't ready for the water to maintain the level it was at or headed up to.

As far as APCO not needing the power that is generated from the dam, well unless someone has experienced the inner workings of a fossil plant they have no idea the ammount of coal it takes to generate power, water is much less expensive than coal so while those gates were open I am fairly sure water was going through the turbines also, generating power which in turn keeps power bills lower than they might have been,, further downstream same water could also be used to generate power at Lay, Mitchell and Jordan.

As to EXTREME, most consecutive days with below freezing weather in about 40 years is pretty extreme. hydro power other than fossil fuel power has kept the cost down to a point that many folks who otherwise might not afford heat can still keep their homes comfortable.

So I havnt the answers, nor do I understand the Theory of Relativity, how to build a space shuttle or how to manage the Coosa River Dam System, I prefer to leave those things to the people who know about such things.

We chose to make investments on Logan Martin, we were not invited to do so by APCO. We chose to either build or buy on the water they control, we can accept the decisions they make or move.

From your nickname I reckon you fish, I would hope to meet a fellow fisherman who post here someday since ,honestly, that is my main reason for keeping our place on the lake,, fishing. Really looking forward to warmer weather, these old bones dont care to fish in the winter.

Have a safe day and God Bless

If I were a betting man, which I am not, I would bet on this happening about the same time it usually does every year.
