Just heard that Dr. Zeiger and his wife were killed in plane crash in Destin. He is the pilot that flies the vintage WW2 planes over the lake. Go to thedestinlog.com for story. They are not identified, but info we have received is that it is him. So very tragic....

It's also on CNN.com. I wondered if it was the same plane.

Photo of his plane in the photo section of this web site. His T-6 is the one with 47 LF on the side.

From what I read it sounds like a high speed stall or a elevator linkage broke. That is so so sad. I feel for the family. It's a hard way to go as a pilot and we try not to think about it.
If you have time to understand whats happened and know you can't do any thing about it always has bothered me in the back of my mind when I'm flying.

Did he have a house on Lake Martin or do people know him from Birmingham?

I agree about that thought when it comes to flying. It has always seemed to me the best way to go is CFIT, not time to think about what went wrong, why is this happening. For me, my number one rule is the recognition that it can happen to me and not the other guy. A lot of my training and reading about flying focuses on how things went wrong and how to break the chain of events that if allowed to continue will not end well.

I have some time in an AT-6 and they are a great plane and very demanding to fly well. If something broke (like the elevator) at the bottom of a loop there is very little time and not much to be done. That's why aerobatics close to the ground are so dangerous and unforgiving of any mechanical problem or pilot error. The sad thing is they both we wearing parachutes but obviously had no time to get out.

I have just attempted to upload a photo of Dr. Zeiger taken by my brother on at 4:34 PM CST on March 5th off the shore of Miramar Beach, FL.

My wife and I will miss the War Birds over the lake.

Yes, the Zeigers were long time home owners on Lake Martin, most recently at Glynmere, the newer development inside Willow Point. And he had a hangar just up the road from there at the RL airstrip.
