Some buddies and I fished in a striper tournament on lake Hartwell (South Carolina) last weekend. It is a very good striper lake and is actually about 12,000 acres larger than Martin. What I was most impressed with was the accessability of quality live bait. Hartwell is stocked with blueback herring which is a major source of food for the stripes. We stayed at a friends lake house and literally within 5 miles there are three bait shops that sell herring and gizzard shad for stripe fishing. You pull up, they fill your tank with a 3" hose with treated water, literally in about half a minute, and you get your bait (trucks were lined up @ every bait shop each morning). I enjoy stripe fishing, and I also know the importance of good live bait ( salties just don't seem to cut it), but it is a full time job getting and keeping gizzards. I fish about every other weekend and it is always a song and dance to get bait. I would like nothing more than to see a place on the lake that consistently kept shad. I know myself (and quite a few other folks) that wouldn't hesitate paying $2-$2.50 for live shad at a conveniently located bait shop. I think it would be a big hit for the folks who like chasing the stripes!
