I've seen several large speed "gofast" type boat around the lake this season. Seems more than in the past. Does anybody know if the length and speed restrictions have been lifted? If they are in place, are they enforced?

Good question to ask the marine police. Law is still the law. Why do they refuse to enforce the law?

There was an article not too long ago with regards to a serious manpower shortage for the Marine Police on Lake Martin due to budget constraints. Some weekends there will be no coverage at all. Although there seems to be fewer boats out this year, I am sure they have higher priority issues than trying to enforce a law that does not impact safety on the lake.

I have noticed the same myself, mainly over Memorial Day weekend.
The law as written states that you are allowed to have up to a 30' boat as long as it's not able to surpass 65 mph. Boats able to operate in excess of 65 m.p.h. are limited to 26'.

I thought there was a grandfather clause to that law which allowed boats already registered/ on the lake to stay.

I'm sorry, I didn't realize that anyone had responded. Yes, as I understand it, those that were registered previous to this law enacted were grandfathered in, which is why the Marinas on the lake bought a surplus of large cruisers, etc, so that they could be sold after the ban as grandfathered boats. I'm not sure how they were registered for the process or anything like that, just going off of what little info I have found and what I have heard around the way.

Ok, upon reading up on the "3 lakes law," this is what I found.
Prohibited are: 1. Any vessel longer than 30’6”. 2. Any houseboat. 3. Any vessel longer than 26’11” that is capable of exceeding 60 m.p.h.
Grandfathering could be obtained for categories 1 and 2, but no mention of category 3 being allowed at all.
Category 1 and 2 can be “grandfathered” in providing the owner prove
to the Marine Police Division that the particular vessel was in use on
Lake Martin prior to July 1, 2006 or offered for sale at an adjacent
marina or dealer prior to that same date. The vessel’s owner is required
to make application for a lake usage permit that is renewable annually
and pay the corresponding fee.
This is the only blurb I found from the mention by Capt. Brooks.
"That being said, though, we did notice a drop-off in the larger
“go-fast” type boat and the few that we did stop were either visiting
from another state or had just purchased the boat and was not aware of
the law."
