I saw in one of the Lake Magazine articles a couple of months ago that a hiking trail  up to the Smith Mountain Fire Tower would be open in July (I think). Access to the trail was supposed to be by boat or land. I circled the tower by water and saw no access. I'm just wondering if the tornado delayed the construction. I'd like to hike it beginning by water or land, but don't know the status.

Anybody have an update?

Check out the website for the organization who is doing the trails:  CRATA  - Cherokee Ridge Alpine Trail Association

www.crata.org

I don't see any information on the website about the Smith Mountain project - but it does have info on how to contact Jimmy Lanier - he's the one in charge and could fill you in.

There has been substantial progress on restoring the tower, but work is not likely to be completed until later in the fall.

The tower is accessable as it always has been .easyest hike is to park @ the bottom of the hill (gate)The gate is very easy to get around with my 4 wheeler - that was a big waste of funds. I saw someone enjoying the view from the top of the tower @ day break monday morning as I was heading out for work!
