on my scale of rating decency in a profession or as a human being? Both rank at the bottom, way down.
Both have perfectly responsible, professional, honest members. But, those who are the good guys don't get their faces or mouths on TV, do they?
Shame on us for allowing a journalist to publish any story which causes major damage or complete destruction to someone's reputation/business/family without accountability for the accuracy of the story. A retraction is always ineffective after the damage is done. Freedom of Speech taken too far.
But, anything is OK for a Hot Story, or a costly law suit? Especially during the Election Process!! We can always retract it later.

It appears the story is not totally without merit. Something happened. But the question is whether it matters.
I blame the 24 hour news cycle. There is a lot of pressure on journalists to continually have the "scoop" -- it has pushed a lot of otherwise responsible journalists to the tabloid side. They are very much a reflection of who we have become. We've become less interested in the facts and thoughtful analysis. Don't forget that there used to be an honor code amongst journalists not to report the seamy stuff. It's all out there now, and people have to do their own analysis as to the credibility.

Yes, Cain today, but many, many other examples every day. I gave CNN/Fox one more chance Wednesday night to be sure I understood why I stopped watching national news programs such as these. CLICK!! Off again.
News Media is unaccountable for what they televise or print. No fear. Just get it on the air quickly. If it is a hoax, ho hum, so what??
Honor and integrity just has no chance against the long reach of the TV screen or many times, the courtroom.
