We have new neighbors in our cove and they have decided to raise chickens.  it is extremely noisy.   All the time.

Are there any regulations against having chickens, livestock on lakefront property? Water contamination? etc?

Thanks!

If previous Alabama Power lot then the covenants prohibit such.

That is so silly -- I feel sure there is a rule against it. Are you in the city limits? It sucks that people have no concern for their neighbors. They will take the stance " i was here first" or "its my property so screw you".  Chickens on lake front property -- now I have heard it all.

And while I am venting ----Junk all over a lot -- by junk I mean piles of crap that have been there for 5 years or more you are never going to use -- should be dealt with. No one wants to see it. And no one wants chickens scratching around on the lake. I am not a snob-- not by a long shot-- I was raised to take care of what you have and respect your neighbors. If you want chickens or other livestock-- buy some acreage or a farm.

Dirt....have you been over to talk with your neighbor regarding the noise and how many roosters do they have? I have chickens (18) in a 10x20 coop with a fenced in ranging area and my neighbors actually come over and we sit and watch the chickens as we talk. I do have three young roosters and one has just recently started crowing. I have a friend that will be picking up the roosters Monday. Without roosters, you don't even know I have chickens. Go talk with your neighbor and maybe y'all came work something out. Good luck.

well now I feel bad...      :(

I had chickens growing up so I know what you are saying is true -- and if you keep them in a a pen like we did -- then they don't wander around.  We had one rooster for about 12 hens. And he crowed in the morning for about 5  minutes-- then it was pretty quiet. It sounded like her neighbors were letting them roam all over. I guess too-- it depends on how much of a lot you have.

But I still get upset about junk piled up ... I'm not backing down on that one.    LOL

Off the cuff probably not. But you may have recourse if:

1. You have covenants in your development that prohibit raising livestock

2 You are in a municipality - a city - that prohibits or requires permitting of livestock in small lots.

3. If the Sherrif deems that the problem is disturbing your right to the "peaceful enjoyment of your propery".

You are living in a very rural Alabama area where city type regulations are held in low esteem even in areas like subdivisions. Maybe the best thing you can do is talk with the folks that have screaming chickens and see if that gets you anywhere. Some people do care about their neighbors rights and some don't.

Good Luck and cock-a-doodle-doo!

I like chickens; 100 years ago most everybody of any stature had them and it was strange to have none.....sounds like Cat needs to rent out some chicken condos.

I think it would be hialrious if someone ordered a Williams and Sonoma Chicken Coop and put it up at the Ridge.  Williams and Sonoma actually does sell them in their catalog. I bet it wouldn't go over very well. Its back to basics for the country. Who knows... maybe we will all have them soon.

Thank you for all the input!  The neighbors chicken may have been caught up or something - it clucked very loudly non-stop for several hours.  Then quit and didn't hear it again.  It got served up for lunch maybe?  lol  They do not have any roosters so no crowing.

I don't mind the chickens - just the non-stop noise.  If there is any future noise (like lots) we will visit with the neighbors and work something out.  We are that way.

I, also, have raised chickens (decades ago) - for meat - not for eggs.  I don't rememeber it being noisy just the awful smell.

Have a great week everyone!
