Some nice political discussion below, but no one has asked the question: OK, we made a mistake by taking over the country and may not be doing things correctly now, but what do we do now?? Walk out?? What??

If you had asked us all how to calibrate an exray machine, we would all tell you that we have no experience with this topic, and to go find an expert. Why is it that everyone believes they are experts in foreign affairs? My response, leave it up to the experts.....

Reason for the question was some of the responses below. People say get out now, stay, etc., but no one addresses how and what then.

The one lesson from Vietnam that the US can't seem to learn Is: You can't preach democracy to people that are hungry, living in fear, with no sense of the value of life.

to a nation that is not educated and whose radical higher ups brainwash their underlings. Since the underlings can't read for themselves - because of lack of education - then the system of grooming terrorists perpetrates itself. This is all they know.

What do you think about this?

Why couldn't woodward have delayed his book untill the election was over? He pre$ents the truth without all the fact$. Where would the attack$ have been if we hadn't been in Iraq? Why did he relea$e hi$ book to the public when it would hurt the Republican$ the most? There is a time and place for everything, even free speech. At certain times, some things are better left unsaid until there is a better time to say them.

agenda--other than selling his book--and that is working with the media to put Democrats in power in Congress. Why else would the book have been introduced at this perfect time.

I agree with you that education is the problem. Middle easterners are being indoctrinated to hate the US. And our kids are being indoctrinated to many of our liberal societies ways of thinking also. If Muslims are indoctrinated to kill us and we're being indoctrinated to appease our enemies, don't you think we're in huge trouble.

The entire US mindset is if you can't handle it in 90 days then it's not worth the effort. All publicly held businesses must reinvent themselves on a 90 day basis to show a profit, we must win our wars in 90 days, and we must change the world in 90 days to suit some liberal, faddish, thought of the moment (Woodward book, etc).

What we can't seem to get is that we are one of the very few societies on earth the have a tremendous value for life. We try to deal with our enemies with our set of moral guidelines and we should be dealing with them under terms they understand and respect.

At first I thought you were talking about the United States!

And the more I think about it, you might be doing just that, even if unintentionally.

perpetuates is what I meant to write.

And, yes, we (the U.S.) could be confused with having our uneducated taking on causes they know absolutely nothing about.

If you saw Woodward on Meet the Press Sunday morning (before church), he has no control over when the book is released. The publisher determines the release date. And why should they wait until after the election? Why shouldn't the voters have access to all the investigative journalism prior to making a choice? No one complained about the timing of release of Woodward's last two books about this administration; in fact, the administration gave him two big pats on the back for his in depth, honest and well documented factual reporting. Maybe another investigative journalist will have something out in rebuttal in the next couple of weeks, or some democrat will fall off the wagon, or fondle an aide, or be caught with his/her hand in the till. More and more our choice of public officials seems like a crap shoot. We may as well throw darts....
