Hey cobra....I had a follow up question regarding internet access problems with comcast cable at the lake. You had responded to a question from BUG back in Oct, with a suggestion for running a tracer program.....cmd.exe--->tracert, etc. I have done this for several websites, and several of them get interrupted, or "request timed out". This happened on both of my laptops, with each failed website "timed out" at the same place/address. Other website traces did fine.

What does this mean?? Does this information isolate the problem to a cable problem vs modem problem vs router problem ????? I will also run the trace on these same sites when I'm back in Bham tomorrow. Given the fact that my Charter internet access in Bham works perfectly, I suspect the traces will go through without a problem.

Thanks in advance for any help Cobra (or others). (bug thanks you too!!)

That normally means that somewhere along the way there is a bottleneck. Can you give me the website and I will run a tracert and post my results here and we will see why this is happening. Cobra

Thanks cobra.....here were a few of the websites that I was tracing.... wachovia.com; chase.com; discover.com.

Now back in Bham (on charter.net), I traced all the sites that I had previously been "timed out" on (on comcast cable)....and I got similar results as at the lake. All the ones that "timed out" there also "timed out" here, and all terminated at the same IP address (different for each website traced). However, despite getting the same tracert results, all of these websites pop up very quickly in Bham, where they would not come up at all, or would load painfully slowly at the lake.

......so now I'm confused again.

Are you using the same computer at the lake that you are in Bham

Hey cobra.....I am using the same 2 laptops at the lake that I use in Bham. Both Dell computers running XP home edition. I use a wireless router (Dell router at the lake, LinkSys router in Bham). Incidentally, the router at the lake was previously used at home, and worked just fine. I don't think that my lake router could be defective, because if I bypass the router by hooking a data cable directly from the cable modem to my laptop, it does NOT work any better.

About the "3meg download from charter," I'm not quite sure. I know that is the download speed I have with my charter cable in Bham. Looking on my ComLink cable bills from the lake, it is listed just as "High Speed Internet access," so I am not sure about the actual speed. As far as I know, ComLink is the ONLY cable service for my specific area at the lake.

My wife called ComLink again today and got their standard answer....they will send a techie out.....again. Now I'm not the most computer literate guy, but the so-called tech they usually send out is a complete techno-idiot. Unfortunately, since we are only at the lake on the weekends, it is hard to get somebody at ComLink with more than 2 gray cells to help me on the weekend.

...........Thanks for your interest and help. BTW, I should probably change my handle to "Used2B4Golf", as the lake has changed my "priorities." (I'm ever hopeful to come up with a way to do both!!)

4Golf, I totally understand how you feel trying to get help from cable companies. The people they send out know very little and that is the way they want it. I read about ComLink and I am betting you have the ultra express( Up to 512 kps download)which should be fine. When you get back to the lake try this site and let me know what your download and upload speeds are. Here is the site I use often to check if speeds are good

http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

Try it from several locations and post your results if you can. Also let me know what brand of modem you have. We can test it if I know the make and model of it. You can check the power level. It will look something like this
Channel Id: 2
Frequency: 34000000 Hz
Channel Width: 3200000 Hz
Channel Power: 36.4 dBmV
Let me know and we will get you back up to speed. Cobra

I will follow your advice when I'm next at the lake (may not be until sometime in Feb) and will give you a holler on the forum.

Thanks again for your help.
