Folks, If the pattern does not change soon expect low water levels all summer long. We count on Spring rains to fill er up and give some "cushion" going into summer. If you remeber the last drought several year ago we had 486 tops around mid summer. We did get some tropical rains late that year but it did not help the summer.

The long range forecast has nothing promising...if you need a level of 487 or higher to get water I think you are in trouble. This will also hurt the already suffering condo market where a relatively worthless "fixed dock" is the norm. Just trying to prepare you "newbies" lurking here that it could and likely will happen if we don't get rain soon...and yes it really stinks I know...

Also as for the big blue loud boat on Sunday, I saw it putting in at a public ramp...the WP will be on the look soon...

Waaay to early to speculate on summer water levels. The only thing predictable about the rainfall in Alabama is the unpredictability.

Bob, after readng your post on everything at the lake I had to respond. Weather forcaster, real estate expert and water patrol guru all in one. It must have been a long winter for you with little or nothing to do. I wouldn't count the lake a total loss for the year just yet. I was out this past weekend and it was great. It is still very early and before long we will all be out under your watchful eye. after reading your post I thought maybe you would throw in a global warming reason as well. It may be time to visit that doctor for depression!!!

I have noticed quite a few shallow lake properties have come up for sale the last few months. Really bad spring to sell 3-4 feet of water if it doesn't rain soon.

Shirt,

I had to laugh at your post. I am not depressed my friend, I too was on my boat this weekend and I had no problem docking said boat at MY pier. I did not say we were doomed for a bad summer but rather that we are indeed way below last year and if the trend continues for much longer you can't really ever "catch up" without a tropical rainfall. There are many good folks on this forum who need about 486 or higher to launch their boats and dock at their homes/condos. This problem willget much worse quickly if we don't get rain.

At least I was not blaming a conspiracy theory or the power company for the lake level like I have seen some do. As for the Waer patrol comment...let me catch your a$$ on a banned boat and I will be the water patrol... of course Feb seems to have an idea as to what to do with that situation :)

At this time, all boats are legal b/c the boat ban law is still in litagation. At the same time you seem to make a threat about taking the law into your own hands about certain boats on the lake??? Good Luck!

I would be careful if I were you. Some of the fine people on Lake Martin may not cotton to the idea of an old coot playing cop.

No threats here. Just a warning that I wouldn't hesitate to call the WP. Of course the litigation is news to me so I guess they are still legal for now...that is unfortunate. In due time we will be rid of them so I can enjoy the lake in peace in my pontoon boat since I am an old coot anyway : )

Of course there ain't gonna be any darn water anyway...

There is any question about the law on noise. It was and still is a violation. Ask some who have received citations.

from the LOUD, fast boat crowd. Noise pollution laws are already on the books and enforceable--just ask Catboat. I've called the WP in the past and they've responded rapidly.

For the record. I didnt mention one thing about noise. I stated FACTS about the said boat ban law.

Bob Put the crack pipe away and get back to reality. If you were just trying to stir the pot as a lot of the folks seem to like to do then fine. If you are trying to be the Mayor of the lake, I am sure you will have to stand in line behind all the other self proclaimed cove kings. Big talk from the 50 Cal folks and noise police. Prior to my retirement from the military we had a name for those type folks Barracks Lawyers. Lots of talk but didn't know Sh$t. As for the Big Boats and the Ban. They didn't solve a thing with the ban, only made it worse as all those folks traded the fast boats in for the big cruisers. I would like to hear what you have to say after you cross one of those wakes. you will get swamped. See ya on the lake.

Swamped? I can help you out if you must. Come ask me, I will be happy to generate some waves for you (on my PWC of course) lol.

Boating 101, when approaching ANY wake, turn and approach at a 90 degree angle. I have had many boats, and NONE of them (including PP) liked hitting wake (of any size) at acute angles...

As for all the discussion of loud boats, I wish the marine police would step up on writing noise and reckless drivers...

I personally aprreciate your service to our Nation.

Don't know much about Barracks Lawyers, but I have met fellas from practically every skill and educational background while in the service.

One thing most of us were able to do in common is joke about some daily issues. I think us .50 cal folks were joking around just a bit. I for one and I doubt any of the others would ever shoot at a boat, car or a person simple because of a minor infraction of the law or just because they were a nuisance.

I have mixed emotions about the Alabama legislation on boating; therefore I have followed the topic with interest but not commented.

Feb,

I completely agree that I would NEVER fire a weapon at a boat, etc. With that said, if I took a notion to fire a .50 cal, I could as I happen to own one along with virtually every other caliber around. Anyone ever fired a .50 cal...not mounted on a Hummer? Amazing weapon :)

For the record, Shirt, I too appreciate your service to our country and I gave up crack weeks ago : )

Here is what James Spann says about the dry weather...

THE ALABAMA DRYNESS: The countryside has a crunching sound when you walk. The entire state has a rainfall deficit that is approaching 50% since New Years Day. For example, at Anniston Airport since January 1 had only 6.02 inches of rain, which is 6.52 inches below normal. Tuscaloosa has received 6 inches, which is a little over 7 inches below normal. It is interesting to note that Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Anniston and Mobile have received almost exactly the same rain amount. Most sections of the state have received less than 1 inch so far in March. Normally this is one of our wettest months of the year.

Better get out the rain dance duds...

I guess if there is not going to be enough water for my condo at the lake I will have to stay in my condo in Marbella this summer. The Med never runs dry.

Sure, I have fired a .50 from a ground tripod, off the ring mount of an M-546 track vehicle, and as a spotter round from the 106 Recoiless. The wildest was firing a quad-50 off a Deuce and a half. It would actually rock the big old truck. We also had the single .50s mounted on dump trucks in our Engineer units.

They did not replace the simple little jeep with the HUMVEE until after I separated from Service.

I believe as the story goes: the Marines were the first to detach the .50 off the 106 Recoiless and used it as the first .50 sniper rifle.

Another funny but unlikely story goes: The North Vietmese captured one of our 106's and took it up North. They gathered a large group of digintaries behind the weapon and fired off a demonstration round. The recoil escape gasses or back blast wiped out the spectators. Thinking they had fired it from the wrong end, they moved the stand for a new group of spectators to the front end of the weapon. After the second demonstration firiing, they returned the weapon to the US.

Filing litigation agaisn't the boat law does not make it NOT law...a judge would have to stay the legislation...no judge has done that, so the law is law, it is a question of enforcement at this time.

Listen, I hate the big boats, but it is not the government's responsibilty to legislate what people can and can't own...next thing you know the governement will be telling us where we can and can't smoke, what we can and can't do in our bedrooms, OH GOD.....ITS HAPPENING!

I don't know about us Marines taking the .50 off the 106, but it probably happened.

The .50 worked really well as a sniper rifle. We left it mounted on the major caliber, and used the 106 E&T mechanism. A good gunner could flick ashes at 2000 meters. We would use one of those little smoke rounds to get the wily Cong or NVA moving. Then after having a little fun with them, we would finish them off with ball ammo. You could save the expensive big round, and the big noise, by doing it that way. This worked especially well if you were on a relatively high OP.

I will give the 106 some credit in destroying my hearing, BTW.

something else to remember folks is BIG boats mean BIG money and income from these people. I just wish i had the money it takes to maintain, operate, and store them. besides its not always the BIG boats that are causing all the problems.
